U.K. Manufacturing Achieves Two Key Environmental Milestones

U.K. Manufacturing continually strives to minimize its environmental impact, recently achieving two key milestones.

In 2017, Environment Specialist Emma Purchase audited all the waste streams at the Hampshire U.K. Manufacturing sites and discovered that a small proportion of waste was being landfilled. Over the course of the year, based on discussions with relevant waste contractors, Emma successfully managed to get those waste items redirected down a recovery route, raising them up the waste hierarchy. As of January 2018, all Hampshire U.K. Manufacturing sites are proud to report zero waste to landfill. This is a great achievement that will reduce the sites’ carbon footprint, while helping with corporate social responsibility credentials.

In addition, as of November 2017, all CooperVision U.K. Manufacturing electricity is generated from biomass, a renewable and sustainable fuel. Prior to this, U.K. Manufacturing was using brown energy, which is energy produced from polluting sources such as fossil fuels. The team considered and analyzed its options. The decision was made to select the green energy option for its environmental benefits.

In terms of waste, the U.K. Manufacturing team focuses on reducing, reusing and recycling as much as possible. At Hamble, as an example, the site recycles approximately 93 percent of all waste generated, with the rest being turned into energy. This is one of many examples that emphasise U.K. Manufacturing’s commitment to acting sustainably and its goal is to increase the amount of recycling even further via local campaigns and information pieces for employees.

U.K. Manufacturing Vice President Steve Mathieson said, “It’s not just about the company being sustainable, our employees take it very seriously too. Looking after the environment and making sure that we do things efficiently is important for us, our employees and their families, and our customers. We’ve got really good people who really care about what they do, and they want to do the right things.”
