Responding to continued growth of the Biofinity® brand around the world, the CooperVision Juana Diaz facility in Puerto Rico is installing two additional production lines to handle increased volume demands.
Adding capacity can be a puzzle, especially finding space to house the massive equipment required. In this case, the Puerto Rico team became creative and identified space that could be used immediately in order to ensure timely execution of the Biofinity® lines.
First, Disposable 55, Disposable 38 and Biomedic toric lens production lines were relocated to another part of the plant, taking approximately five weeks for the move and testing before being placed back into operation. That freed 17,000 square feet for renovation, with updates made to provide the necessary infrastructure for the Biofinity® lines, including floor drains, electricity, purified water, alcohol and HVAC.
Installation began in March, with each line taking 21 weeks to be completed. The first line is scheduled for manufacturing startup in August 2018 and the second line in October 2018.
“It’s critical that we meet the production requirements of our customers, being able to manufacture the quantities they need in the time frame they specify. Our new Biofinity® lines—and the efforts of our team to make this capacity expansion happen in a seamless manner—go a long way in keeping our customer service levels high, our sales colleagues happy and our customers eager to work with us,” said Eligio Santiago, Manufacturing Director.
